The Crit.

 Crit.

The crit where I showed these 5 photographs I feel went well. The comments that were said were very varied and versatile. Video games were a strong comment of them seeing as the female look like she is CGI and had just stepped out of a video game. The male gaze was referenced due to her looking almost naked which is visually pleasing to the male gender, However the female predatory gaze is the counter argument because in some of the photographs she looks like she is very intimidating, especially in the face on photographs because she looks more scary and these photographs were the most popular.  One person said "The one where she has her eyes looking down I would hang only that photograph on my wall, because it gives a very classical context with a glamour pose." These photographs gives a sense of strong female Hollywood figures i.e Jennifer Lawrence who in fact played mystique in X-men who was blue. The guessing of the context about these photographs were pretty much on point, I had comments saying that she was a siren and a mermaid, relating to dark seduction and even referencing the film Pirates of the Caribbean. They said that the photographs were vibrant, the use of bright colours were good and it seemed authentic.
I feel like these comments have affected my work in a positive way and will definitely help me with future photoshoots.

Final Photoshoot for 3in1 (Creature)

LENS/CAMERA notes

Camera&Lens Notes//
DSLR- Digital Single Lens Reflex
SLR- Single Lens Reflex

  • SLR- With a black shutter and uses one lens.
If a lens has more glass, it will have less exposure and the shutter of the lens would be more open.

A picture is made up of these three components with help of the camera:

Shutter speed controls the motion blur of a photograph, ISO controls the sensitivity of light entering the lens and Aperture creates depth of field within a photograph.

A 17mm Lens has a short distance, it has an equation between width of entrance pupil and film plane (the two glasses within a lens)

A 85mm Lens has more distance between the glass inside.Zoom in and it creates a narrow angle.

Photographer Research for 3in1 No.2

Tim Walker.

Tim Walker is a Fashion photographer who is famous for shooting for magazines such as Vogue, W magazine and Love magazine. Tim has been in the photographic industry for around 15 years and is now currently making moving film. The Victoria and albert museum and The National Portrait Gallery is where some of his collections are permanently placed.
Tim's specialty i would say is taking portraits, portraits is a running theme through his photography, weather it is full body portraits, posed portrait photography to facial shot portraits. His work can be either be very real or very faked, i.e. natural or well posed.
My favourite photography of his is his photoshoot for W Magazine shooting Kristen McMenamy as a mermaid. I feel like this particular shoot works really well with my own interest of creatures, relating to my 3In1 brief.

Whitesnow studio photography.

consisting of Sonia and Mark Whitesnow.
Sonia and mark Whitesnow both work and live in Russia, Their practice of work is using natural materials as well as modern technologies.
My opinion of their work is that it is very natural and pure, with their project 'Burnt by the Sun' there's something about it that is almost angelic like with pastel tones. Their work relates to mine because I am taking the role of the project 'creatures' and one of their projects is called the  'Psychospa Series' which focuses on man and nature, making the humans look almost creature like, I feel like I could base my finals of their work and mostly on the 'Psychospa Series' photographs.

Photography studio workshop

Photography studio workshop:

Health and safety:

  • No food and drink but bottles with a lid are allowed.
  • Careful of trip hazards
  • For the tripods extend the legs and make sure it is stable and check that its strong.
  • There are 3 background rolls and use the chain to pull it down and roll it up.
  • Ask a technician  to change the colour, don't do it yourself.
  • Use the rubber strip to stop the paper background from curling.
  • Always remove shoes before stepping on the paper.
  • Switch the lights off before changing accessories but leave 10/15 minutes.
  • Trigger flash before turning off.
  • Never use the light without an accessory.
  • if the light is faulty it will beep.
Basic Camera functions:
Aperture:
Aperture lets light into the camera, the larger the aperture the more light is let in through the lens and the smaller the aperture the less light is let in through the lens.
You measure the aperture in F numbers, the smaller the F number the more light is let in a visa versa.

Depth of field:
A large aperture gives a shallow depth of field, and you use the black dial on the camera. depth of field effects the foreground, middleground and the background. It controls how much of an object can be in focus.

Shutter Speed:
The shutter speed controls the amount of light, is the shutter speed is slow the more light is received and the faster the shutter speed is the less light is received. and use the top dial of the camera you get given in the studio.

I set up and learned about the lights, I know how to change the accessory and use the different modes on the back. this is the example that I did and used a dummy to model the lightning.

this lightmeter is used to measure the ISO, shutter speed and aperture by holding it up to the model while the flash and lights are set off, it then tells you what numbers you need to put into the camera to get the right exposure for a good photograph.

Creature Photoshoot Finals.

Response 1:
Demon.

This is a self portrait of mine and i used my Nikon d3100 and used photoshop t highly manipulate myself into a demon.
The first initial impression of this photograph is that it evokes a raw feeling of scary, dark and evil, this is evident with the use of the colours, red being angry and passionate and black being dark and a vast space of nothingness.  with the lighting being very dark it gives the photograph a very evil atmosphere when looking at it. seeing as the subject is a demon the way it is edited ( skin made red, horns attached and nails sharpened) is very effective and relates to previous research. however the exposure is too dark so you cant see much detail within the hair. the composition of the photograph being a full framed portrait means that it is very in the face of the viewer and gives an almost in-your-face type feel.

Response 2:
Hantu Air.

Self portrait of mine used with a nikon d3100 and edited in photoshop.
This photograph evokes the emotion on uncertainty, this is because this creature is looking directly at the viewer and the viewer does not know the intentions of this creature leaving it a mystery. it has a very watery effect due to the water and the blue colours giving is a damp look to it. The photoshopping is a skill that i have shown in this photograph because instead of actually being in the water i merged two photographs together with editing to make it seem im actually in water, when in reality im not. being a landscape composition photograph really gives the impact of there being alot of water, it makes the photograph seem vast and wide.

Creature Research.

Mythological creature 1:

Demons can have many appearances, the stereotypical version of a demon is the red rough skin with sharp teeth and horns. typically ram horns. Another version is when they take the appearance of a dead person or wearing the skin of someone who they are possessing.

Behavior:
A demon's behavior is very scary and painful. they are the ones that create fear. anxiety and spiritual pain. they whisper sins into pure peoples ears. but the idea of a demon is very conceptual idea, one mans demon is another mans angel.

Motivation:
A demons motivation is the devil, Demons are definitely linked to the devil due to them being a part of hell and the devil being the king of hell. their motivation is their own pain and suffering.

Capabilities:
The capabilities of a demon is that they can cause sickness, disease, physical abnormalities, mental torment. They can influence human events, can speak through a persons voice. and see through their eyes. they can influence emotions, thoughts and actions.
